3 steps to take after an auto accident in Georgia

The last thing you remember is that a large vehicle was headed straight for you. The night was dark, but you saw the vehicle coming for long enough that you could try to evade it. It wasn't fast enough, though, and you only managed to turn your side of the vehicle away from the oncoming truck.

As a result of being able to move slightly, you were able to walk away from the crash with your life. Instead of a head-on crash, you were in a T-bone accident, which may have prevented your death. You suffered several broken bones and a concussion regardless of your attempts to prevent the crash.

It wasn't until days later that you were fully aware of your surroundings in the hospital. You know that the accident wasn't your fault, but what do you need to do now? All you can think about is the rising cost of your medical bills each day you stay at the hospital.

1. Relax and talk to the police

As soon as you can, it's important to talk to the police about what happened. You should not say anything about whether or not you believe you played a role in the accident. Instead, tell the police about what the other driver did and how the accident occurred. The point here is never to incriminate yourself but also to make it known that you believe the other driver was at fault.

2. Request a copy of the police records

These records will have a determination of fault on them. With the information on a police report, your attorney can help you negotiate with the driver's insurance company for a settlement that is fair.

3. Get the medical care you need, but keep the receipts

While you're getting all the care you need, it's important to keep the receipts. This is evidence of how much your injuries have cost you along with how much you might be estimated to spend in the future.

With these three steps, you can make sure you have the evidence you need to seek compensation after a crash.
